We are excited about getting to know more about you in the internship interview process. To begin, we would like you to submit a video that tells us a little bit more about you and your goals in counseling.
Your video should be about 10 minutes long. If you aren’t certain about your area of specialty or you’re still trying to refine your theoretical orientation, don’t worry. We know that part of the internship experience is to help you figure these things out. We are much more interested in getting to know how you’re thinking about these topics than in getting a specific answer.
- Your name, degree program (LPC, MFT), & desired specialization (if applicable)
- What prompted your interest in becoming a counselor?
- What are you most hopeful of experiencing through your internship?
- What type of setting do you anticipate working in after you graduate?
- Briefly describe your theoretical orientation at this stage of your training.
- Read through the case presented below and provide a brief case conceptualization. (This doesn’t need to be a complete case presentation, but rather a synopsis of how you would proceed with this client and why.)
Video Case Study:
Matt is a 35-year-old married man with two young children. He has been employed as an electrical engineer in a local firm for 10 years. Matt married his college girlfriend a few years after graduation when they discovered she was pregnant. He describes their relationship as “typical.” They eat meals and attend family gatherings together but do little else as a couple. Matt spends his spare time reading, playing golf and watching TV. For the last two months, Matt has felt blue and his appetite has decreased. Because he has not been sleeping well, Matt drinks more at night. Sometimes his life feels meaningless. Matt has tried to “get over it” but he just feels stuck.
